  • SERVICES

    COACHING

Targeted to small business owners, entrepreneurs, career changers and authors, coaching entails scheduling one-on-one sessions (or group sessions for groups of like-minded professionals), to discuss mission, business goals, personal brand and story.

This opportunity starts with a commitment to four one-hour sessions (with homework in-between). This includes a reflection on process and progress at the completion of the four sessions, and a discussion of Next Steps and looking forward.

    CREATIVE STRATEGY

Focused on new companies, authors and those getting started with executing communications, promotion and branding strategies; this service involves exploring narrative approaches to telling your story and/or that of your organization or book.

These approaches may include crafting (or enhancing) messaging platforms; media plans; talking points; bios and organizational descriptions for your website; content for LinkedIn and other social media platforms; and marketing copy.

    STORY EDITING

Concentrated on authors at work on all stages of story development from the initial seed of an idea, to an outline or draft manuscript; and moving these authors towards a completed book.

Work includes manuscript consultation and outline creation. Authors choose between a four- or eight-session commitment. Progress will be assessed at the completion of the sessions and Next Steps will be discussed. Group coaching is also available.

    TRAINING

Applied in a variety of formats, the "Get Your Story Down" training is offered as a two-hour and half-day workshop (two one-hour workshops are also an option) or keynote session.

This training is hands-on, interactive and contains exercises that build cumulatively throughout the session as participants craft their personal narrative and explore the most effective means for sharing their stories with the world.

  • PRINCIPAL

    Ben Tanzer, AM

I am an Emmy-award winning coach, creative strategist, podcaster, writer, teacher and social worker who has been helping nonprofits, publishers, authors, students, small business owners and career changers tell their stories for over 20 years.

I serve as a Lecturer (and part-time faculty) at Lake Forest College where I teach LOOP 202: Professional Development in the 21st Century and Liberal Arts and The Workplace, and oversee the ACTIVATE program.

I provide promotional and strategic support on acclaimed books for publisher Green Writers Press (and did so previously for Curbside SpIendor), as well as authors Greg Olear and Hosho McCreesh on their self-published books Dirty Rubles and Chinese Gucci respectively.

I partner with When Words Count Retreat to provide coaching to authors on story editing and transforming their ideas into completed books.

I've also served as a coach to several small business owners and career changers as they focused on crafting their personal brand and narrative, including the leadership of lylole and Phillip Hall Financial Consulting.

I've been invited to present the keynote address and lead workshops on storytelling, branding and personal narrative for a range of groups, such as Modern Capital Concepts and The Association of Consultants to Nonprofits.

As an author I've had eight books published, and been a nominee for Pushcart and StorySouth awards, a finalist at the 13th Annual National Indie Excellence Awards and 2019 Eric Hoffer Book Awards for Be Cool - a memoir (sort of), the recipient of the 2015 Devil's Kitchen Literary Festival Nonfiction Prose Award for Lost in Space and a Bronze medal at the 2015 Independent Publisher Book Awards in Science Fiction for Orphans.

I previously worked for 17 years at Prevent Child Abuse America, including serving as the Senior Director of Strategic Communications. While there, I developed the new chapter development program, created and managed the organization's social media platforms, wrote and managed grants from the CDC and Doris Duke, served as staff lead on the organization's current strategic plan, co-scripted the 2010 Emmy award-winning Ounce of Prevention of Florida “Prevent Child Abuse” public service campaign, and led workshops and provided keynote addresses on messaging and framing across the country.

I've also worked in the fields of child welfare, homelessness and HIV/AIDS.
